Very
decorative map of the world centered on the Pacific by Heinrich Scherer,
printed in ca. 1702 for Scherer's 'Atlas Novus' (1702-1710).California
is shown as an Island and there is a very distinctive Northwest Passage.
The reports of the early Jesuits and French are in evidence in the Great
Lakes and Mississippi Valley. Japan is oversized and Australia and
New Guinea are incomplete. The large title cartouche shows a
personification of the Virgin Mary with each corner filled with a scene
of a devotional queen representing the continents. Heinrich Scherer was
a professor of mathematics in Munich and a devout Jesuit.
