| Description | Antique print ( copper engraving) of a full- length portrait Manes Corbicus. Manichaeus (Manes) Corbicus was a religious leader, born in Ecbatana, Persia and the founder of Manichaeism, a dualistic religion which offered salvation through the acquisition of special knowledge of spiritual truth (‘illumination’). In c.245 he began to proclaim his new religion at the court of the Persian king, Sapor (Shahpur) I. He traveled widely, but eventually King Bahram I abandoned him to his Zoroastrian enemies, who crucified him. |
