Title  --
Maker C.F. Kell after Carl Bock
Year 1881 / 1887 , 's Gravenhage, Martinus Nijhoff, 1881-1887
Description Antique print (  lithograph ) of a Tring Dayak  woman of Borneo from the first Dutch edition of  'Reis in Oost- en Zuid Borneo van Koetei naar Banjermassin' by Carl Bock. Carl Bock made his expedition to east- and south Borneo in order of Governor-General Van Lansberghe. Bock's task was to write an account of the various Dayak tribes living in the interior of the area. Little was known about these "savages" -- who firmly rejected Dutch authority -- apart from the fact that they were head-hunters, some even cannibals. Carl Bock passed  through areas never before penetrated by Europeans.
